(MIMICO, ON) June 24, 2022 — The Toronto Beaches came up just a goal short on Friday night, dropping a 19-18 final to the Mimico Mountaineers at Mimico Arena.
Willem Firth continued his hot play this season, finishing the game with eight goals and 11 points. Clifford Gaston (1G, 5A), Matt Collison (1G, 4A), David Anderson (3G, 2A), and Jacob Hickey (2G, 3A) also chipped in solid offensive outings.
The tone was set in this game from the outset, with both teams going goal-for-goal for the entire first period. Toronto held a slim 9-7 lead in the dying seconds of the first frame. However, Mimico would score a pair in just 16 seconds to tie it up heading into the first intermission.
The teams would continue the back and forth in the second, with Mimico taking a 5-4 advantage through 40 to make it a 14-13 game in favour of the hosts.
Toronto would battle back, and back-to-back goals from Collison and Miller gave the visitors the lead at the 9:48 mark. The Beaches would defend hard down the stretch, but Mimico found the game-tying goal from the stick of Carson Moyer with 2:10 remaining. Curtis Bukta tallied the eventual game-winner with 53 seconds remaining in regulation, sealing the Crombie Cup for the Mountaineers in the process.
Sitting at 10-5 on the year, the Beaches will look for a bounce back when they welcome the Brampton Excelsiors to Ted Reeve Arena on June 30.
