TORONTO, ON (June 24, 2024) – After a two-day break, the Toronto Beaches hosted the Mimico Mountaineers at Ted Reeve Arena Monday night for game one of the Crombie Cup. A chippy matchup between league rivals saw the Mountaineers serve the Beaches their first loss of the season in a 13-8 final.
Forward Will Sheehan had a night of his own, scoring four power-play goals and two assists, racking up an impressive six-point night.
After the opening face-off, both teams were met with a 10-minute defensive stalemate – however, Finn Thomspon of Mimico broke the ice. Matt Collison responded promptly, grabbing a goal less than a minute later to tie the game at one. A mere two minutes later, Sheehan found AJ Nikolic who put his name on the score sheet. The Mountaineers headed to the power play where they capitalized at the 5:22 mark of the period – with Thompson getting his second of the game.
Sheehan and Eric McDonald made their marks to close out the period, with each scoring one in the final four minutes of play – Sheehan getting one on the powerplay and MacDonald from a well-tossed ball down the floor from Goaltender Thomas Kiazyk to get his first with the Beaches.
Toronto held a 4-2 lead over the Mountaineers heading into the first intermission.
Defender Eoin MacKay started the period for the Beaches by reeling in a well-fed pass from Kiazyk and stepping into a shot to beat Goaltender Nate Whittom.
However, Mimico would turn the tide with a six-goal run, led by Isiah Moran-Weekes’ three – with one coming on the power play – Jacob Keller, Henry Caponiti, and Finn Thompson.
A boisterous second period for Mimico saw them lead Toronto 8-5 heading into the final frame.
The Mountaineers picked up right where they left off, scoring three to open the final 20. Alex Roussel got two, with one on the power play and Moran-Weeks making it four on the night.
Sheehan took the wheel, breaking Mimico’s nine-goal streak with back-to-back-to-back power-play goals trying to bring Toronto back into the game. Even so, Mimico grabs two more Lucas Dudemaine added a pair in the final four minutes to seal the 13-8 win for the visitors.
The Beach Boys head south to Iroquois Lacrosse Arena to take on the Six Nations Arrows for their second matchup on Wednesday, June 26. Opening face-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
