Dooley plays hero; Beaches beat Jr Lakers in overtime

(PETERBOROUGH, ON) June 13, 2022 — Returning to his hometown, defender Taylor Dooley sent his team home happy on Monday night, as the Toronto Beaches beat the Peterborough Jr. Lakers 11-10 in overtime at Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Willem Firth continued his stellar sophomore campaign for the Beaches, posting four goals and six points on the night. He helped get Toronto started in the first, potting a pair of goals. He was able to find the back of the net on his first with a shot off the post from a sharp angle. He followed that up with a finish on the crease after slipping his defender off-ball.

David Anderson added a third straight goal for the Beach off a cross-floor feed from Firth.

Peterborough answered in a big way to end the first, however, scoring four straight to take the one-goal advantage into the intermission.

The Beaches hopped back out in front with a big second frame. Anderson quickly knotted the game before Firth completed the hat trick. Jakson Raposo got out on the run and scored his 10th goal of the campaign, making it a three-goal run.

Peterborough quickly answered with a pair of goals to tie the game once again. But Eoin MacKay outran his man and beat Jackson Hainer for his first career Junior A goal. Raposo added his second of the night, floating the ball over Hainer’s right shoulder after some fakes on the crease.

Toronto carried an 8-6 lead into the locker room, needing just 20 more minutes to seal their seventh win of the summer.

Matt Collison got things going in the third with a stinging shot from distance. But the Jr. Lakers came back with a three-goal run to tie it at nine.

Collison’s second of the game gave the Beaches the lead with under half the period to play. The score would stay the same until the final minute of the game. Peterborough called timeout with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, and off a shot early in the possession, Daniel Clark tied the game, sending it to overtime in the process.

It would take just 1:12 to find a winner in the final frame. Off a loose ball battle, Dooley was able to scoop it up and push in transition. Between two defenders on either side of him, the defender got the goalie to bite on a fake before dumping it over the shoulder for the winner.

With the victory, the Beaches now sit at 7-4 on the year. They’ll have a chance to sweep the season series with Peterborough on Thursday, as they welcome the Jr. Lakers to Ted Reeve Arena.
